REPRESENTATION OF THE EARTH
THE EARTH AND MAPS
The Earth is a sphere so the best way to represent it is on a globe that shows us distances, landforms and sizes of continents and oceans without distortions.
However, globes are not easy to carry, so we use maps, that are flat representations of all or part of the Earth. Maps distorts the shape and distances of some forms, for example, Antarctica and Greenland appear much larger than they are. You can see very good maps of the whole world going to GOOGLE MAPS
Maps represent geographical features in a smaller version. A scale indicates the relatioship between the distance on a map and the real distance. If you click on the next image you´ll learn more about it.
PARALLELS AND MERIDIANS
Parallels and meridians are imaginary lines that we use in order to find any place on Earth. You will have more information if you click on the words LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE
