- Chemical energy: This energy is stored in some substances. These are some examples:

  • When you eat pasta, your body receives the energy from carbohydrates.
  • A mobile phone uses the chemical energy in a battery in order to make calls, play games…

- Electrical energy: This is the movement of charged particles between two different places. An example of this would be…

  • The electricity that travels to homes (to watch TV, turn on the lights, use the microwave...) and factories (to use different machinery) through metal cables.

- Thermal energy: This energy is related to the movement of atoms in an object or substance. We can see this type of energy when using our oven. Heat and temperature increase to cook food and, meanwhile, the object releasing heat it’s cooling down.

- Nuclear energy: This type of energy is stored in the atomic structure of all matter. In nuclear power stations, scientists release this energy by breaking down radioactive materials.

- Radiant energy: This is energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. Light is a prime example of radiant energy. We use this type of energy in cameras, computers, cars, to name but three.

- Sound energy: Sounds are made by vibrations travelling through the air, a liquid or a solid. They make our eardrums vibrate, so we can hear the sound. When we play the guitar, the sound travels through the ear until it reaches our eardrum.

- Mechanical energy: It’s the energy that produces movement and enables people and things to move, go faster or change direction.

There are two types of mechanical energy:

  • Kinetic energy: is energy that results from the motion of an object. For example, a bike transforms the energy from your muscles into kinetic energy.
  • Potential energy: is the energy that results from the position of an object. For example, when you lift an object, you give it potential energy.
