THE SECOND SPANISH REPUBLIC

Segunda RepúblicaPeople became increasingly unhappy with the dictatorship. Alfonso XIII called for the elections to try to win back Spanish people`s trust, but it was too late. The people voted for a Republic and Alfonso XIII had to leave Spain. On April 14th 1931, Spain became a Republic again.

THE CONSTITUTION OF 1931

The Constitution of 1931:

  • guaranteed freedom of expression.

  • gave the right to vote to men and women for the first time.

  • separated the Church from the Government and took away its privileges.

But some problems soon started to appear:

CHANGES IN THE SECOND REPUBLIC

In the first years of the Second Republic the government created a new constitution and introduced social reforms. It carried out:

  • education reforms, including building thousands of new schools and removing religion as a mandatory subject.

  • land reforms that gave farm workers the opportunity to purchase land for themselves

  • labour reforms to improve the conditions and lives of workers.
