Slavery was legal in the USA from 1641 on. Even after its independence, the country kept slaves, especially in the Southern States. This famous novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe became a symbol of the antislavery movement when it was first published in 1861-2. Finally, slavery was abolished in 1865.
