A Muslim Astronomical Observatory in India

Jantar Mantar Delhi

In this link you are going to see a real astronomical observatory made by a Muslim Maharaja of India, named Jai Singh II. It was made in the 18th century and not in the middle ages but I am almost sure that it was inspired in ancient astronomical obervatories. The Maharaja Jai Singh II made a total of five astronomical observatories. The more important were in Jaipur and Delhi.

As you already know Muslims promoted science and arts, and they were very interested in astronomical observations.

Astrolabe

Astrolabio

The astrolabe was invented by the Greeks but was improved and spread by the Muslims during the Medieval Times.

This astronomical tool was used by astronomers, astrologers and navigators. It was used  for knowing the position of the Moon, the Sun, the Plantes and the Stars. You could also calculate the local hour and the latitude.

This is a photographs of the Al-Sahli's Atrolabe, made in 1065 in the Taifa of Toledo.

Here is a very interesting video explaining how the astrolabe works. This is the link. (You can use the subtitles).

In this other link you can see the different parts of the Astrolabe and its different functions:

I also let you these links where they explain how to use and how to do an astrolabe. Maybe we can make one astrolabe in class.
