Touch

The Skin

How do we feel?

  • Skin layers:

    • Epidermis (provides protection, gives our skin its colour)

    • Dermis (middle layer. supports the epidermis and contains many nerve endings)

    • Fatty tissue ( keeps us warm, provides nutrients to the other to layers)

  • Nerve endings (sensory nerve on our skin that detects information, produces nerve impulses and transmits them to the brain through the sensory nerves)

Hearing

The five senses: hearing

How do we hear?

  • Sound waves --> eardrum (the eardrum vibrates)

  • The small bones inside the ear vibrate.

  • The Cochlea detects the vibrations and produces nerve impulses.

  • The Auditory nerve transmits the nerve impulses to the brain.

  • The brain interprets the information.

Interaction

  • The nervous system
    • The brain
      • Parts (picture)
        • Cerebrum [it's the largest and most complex part of the brain. It controls our intelligence, memory, personality, emotion, speech and the ability no feel and move.]
        • Cerebellum [it's responsible for balance, movemen and coordination.]
        • Brainstem [it connects the brain to the spinal cord. It controls some involuntary actions (breathing, heartbeat)]
    • The spinal cord
    • Nerves
      • Types of nerves:
        • Sensory nerves
        • Motor nerves
    • Nerve cells
      • Parts
        • Dentrites [they are thin fibres. they transmit messages and create electrical signals (nerve impulses)]
        • Cell body [or nucleus. It controls the nerve cell and creates nerve impulses]
        • Axon [It transmits the nerve impulses]
        • Synapse [it's the space between nerve cells]
  • The five senses
    • The Skin (skin layers)
    • Hearing. How do we hear?, parts of our ears
    • Sight. How do we see?, parts of our eyes.
