  • The course

Welcome to the first course of Technology in the Secondary School. This is the first time you study Tecnnology so almost everything will be new for you.

We will start the course by studying Technical drawing. This will allow us to design 3d objects, using a program named Sketchup.

    Car

Then we will study wood as a technical material. We will learn its properties, diffetent types of woods and how to work with wood. This way, we will be able to build real objects we have designed previously.

    Car

After that we are going to learn things related to electricity. When we finish, we'll be able to assemble electric circuits, so we can add electric components to the object we have made by wood.

You can see in the video a car with a motor and how we can control it by changing the direction of the movement.

When we finish with the car we'll learn how to program using blocks. To do this we'll use Scratch, a visual programming language to create animations, programs, games and more things. Here you can see an example of a simple game made with Scratch.

After using Scratch you will already be familiar with programming with blocks, so you are ready to learn how to use App Inventor.

App Inventor is a web site where you can create apps for mobile phones using blocks. You will use the computer to design and program the app and then you will send it to your mobile phone, isntall it and use it.

    Technical drawing

Technical drawing is a universal language, which makes it possible to present and exchange the information needed to build an object with precision.

Technical drawing is based on rules, in order to present accurate and realistic visual information, which is combined with numbers and symbols to form descriptions.

We'll see the difference between a sketch, a diagram and a technical drawing.

    Chair

We'll see as well what a perspective is and the different views an object has.

Finally we'll draw 3D objects with the software SketchUp.

    Wood

Wood is a technical material that has many applications and is used to make many different types of objects.

In this unit we are going to learn the properties of the wood. Then we'll see how to obtain wood from nature and the different products that are made of wood. Finally we'll see how to work with wood and the different tools we can use to make an object with wood.

    Electricity

Electricity is the science that studies electrons. In this unit we are going to learn how electrons can move through some kind of materials (conductors), that form electric circuits.

We'll see all the components we need to assemble an electric circuit an how to control an electric receiver, that transforms electricity into a different type of energy.

    Circuit

We'll see as well what electromagnetism is and how to make an electromagnet.

Finally we'll see how to change the way a motor rotates. This has may applications, for example we can make a vehicle to go forward or backward or we can use it in a crane to lift or lower objects.

    Programming

Scratch is a visual programming language based on blocks, that allows us to create programs, animations, stories, musical instruments and games.Scratch

We will learn coding concepts and create interactive projects without needing to learn a text-based programming language.

    Scratch editor

Scratch can either be used online in a web browser, or downloaded and used offline.

    Appinventor

In this unit we will learn how to create our own apps for mobile phones. To do this, we will use App Inventor.

App Inventor is a web site with a visual programming environment that lets you develop applications for Androidphones. If we want to use App Inventor we need to have a google account and go to www.http://ai2.appinventor.mit.edu

We will build apps by working with:

    • The App Inventor Designer, where you select the components for your app.

    AppInventorDesigner

    • The App Inventor Blocks Editor, where you assemble program blocks that specify how the components should behave.

When you are done, you have to package the app and it will be stored in the computer. Then, you have to send the app to your mobile phone and install it.

    Word processor

A word processor is a software program capable of creating, storing and printing typed documents. It enables your to write a text, store it electronically, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and characters from the keyboard, and print it.

Today the word processor is one of the most frequently used software programs on a computer.

The most popular word processor may be the program Microsoft Word, which is included in the Microsoft Office aplication suite. This is the one we are going to use, but you have to pay for it. If you don't have it, you can use a similar free program, Writer, which is part of the OpenOffice aplication suite. You can download OpenOffice for free here. You can use Google docs as well.
