About the author:

Anne Fine is a British author best known for her children’s books. She has written more than 40 books. Fine started writing by chance. One day, she was trapped in a cold house by a snowstorm and she was unable to get to the library. She started writing to cheer herself up. She refuses to use a word processor and prefers to write with a pencil. Although Fine is famous for her comedies, her books have sometimes got a serious theme. Her most famous book is probably Madame Doubtfire, which deals with parental separation and divorce. It was made into a Hollywood film with the famous actor Robin Williams in the leading role.

Background:

  • Parental Rights and Responsibilities: The parental arrangements in the Hilliard family are typical of many families where parents are divorced. Children live with one parent, and visit the other parent according to a pre-arranged agreement.

  • Home Help: In Britain, children very often come home from school before their parents get home from work. Parents usually employ a helper to be with the children till they get home and to do work around the house.

  • Art Modelling: Many art classes employ live models to pose for the students. Models are most commonly used for classes in figure drawing, figure painting, sculpting and photography. Unlike fashion models, art models aren’t chosen for their good looks. Students must learn how to draw, sculpt or photograph all types of people, so the models may be young or old, fat or thin. Often, the models are asked to pose in the nude or with a variety of props. Art modelling isn’t easy, as it requires staying in the same position for long periods of time
