PRESENT SIMPLE GRAMMAR

We use the present simple: 

For regular actions: I drive to school. 

For facts or things that are always true: Dogs have four legs. 

For habits: I usually get up early in the morning.

TIME EXPRESSIONS

We often use expressions of time and prepositions with the present simple to when something happens. 

PREPOSITIONS IN, ON, AT

IN

Use IN for:

specific months My birthday is in April.

years: My daughter was born in 2020. 

seasons: We go to the beach in summer. 

centuries: The company was founded in the 20th century.

lengths of time: I need your answer in 15 minutes. 

ON

Use ON for: 

specific days: I go to the gym on Mondays and Thursdays.  

specific dates: We got married on the 4th of May. 

AT

Use at for: 

specific time: I go to school at nine o'clock. 

specific period: We sing carols at Christmas/ at night/ at the weekend. 

We also use prepositions with parts of the day

We don't use prepositions  

with the following expressions

Today, tomorrow, yesterday, this morning, tonight, last, next, every.

PRESENT SIMPLE 3RD PERSON SINGULAR

Most third person singular (he/ she/ it) add and -s at the end of the verb. 

I read

You read

He reads

She reads

It reads

We read

You read 

They read


However, there are some exceptions in which we need to add "-es"

Verbs ending in: 

  • "-tch"--- He watches TV.
  • "-ch"--- She teaches English.
  • "-sh"--- He brushes his teeth.
  • -"ss"--- He kisses his mother.
  • "-o" --- She goes to school. 
  • "-x"--- She mixed the salad.

Verbs that end in "consonant + y", change the "y" to "i" and then add "-es"

  • He studies Spanish.
  • He flies planes.

Verbs that end in "vowel + y" do NOT change the "y" ti "i"

  • She plays tennis.
  • She buys lunch.

DO NOT CHANGE THE THIRD PERSON SINGULAR IN THE FOLLOWING CASES

Questions

  • Does she work in a hospital? 
  • Where does he teach English.

Negative sentences

  • She doesn't work
  • He doesn't watch TV.
