PRESENT CONTINUOUS
We use the present continuous to talk about things that are happening at the moment of speaking.
FORM
The present continuous if formed using the verb to be + verb -ing.
I am reading a book.
SPELLING RULES
One syllable verbs
Verbs ending in -e, drop the e and add -ing.
make → making
One syllable verbs
One syllable verbs that end in consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC) double the last consonant and then add -ing.
run → running
swim → swimming
Do NOT double the last consonant if the verb ends in two consonant.
talk → talking
help → helping
Do NOT double the letter if the verb has two vowels + consonant
read → reading
look → looking
Two syllable verbs
When the verb has two or more syllables ending in CVC you must double the last consonant ONLY if the last syllable is stressed.
begin → beginning
commit → committing
Verbs ending in W, X and Y
Do NOT double the last consonant, just add -ing.
snow → snowing
pay → paying
buy → buying
