| (1) People have always danced. Every society has its own dances. We have pictures, on pottery and stone, which show dances from several thousand years ago, in Egypt and Greece. | a) |
| (2) Coming to more recent times, one of the first dance school we know about was the Opera National Paris, opened in 1661 in Paris. Only men were accepted until 1681. After 1981 women were accepted too. | b) |
| (3) Until the 20th century, the common dance style was the ballroom: a sequence of movements planned for couples and groups. Everyone moved and finished at the same time forming a square. The music played for a set time, and then stopped. A famous ballroom dance was the Waltz. | c) |
| (4) Around 1800, dancing style began to change, and people started moving around the room as they pleased, and some people started dancing separately. Street dance is like that. But all these types of dance have music. | d) |
| (5) At the same time, around the world there are many traditional dances. Some of them have been going for hundreds of years. We call them folkloric dance. |
