While coffee remains the most popular caffeinated beverage in mainland Europe, the British have always preferred tea. Introduced to the court of Charles II in the late 17th century, tea quickly went from being a luxury item to being something even the poorest citizens could afford. Even now, it is the nation’s favourite drink with three quarters of the British population drinking tea at least once a day. So, why do the British love tea so much? This talk will try to answer this question by looking at the history and traditions surrounding tea in Britain.

While most British take their tea directly in a mug from a teabag these days, they are still extremely passionate about this drink, feeling that it is an integral part of their identity. Covering the history of tea to the etiquette surrounding it, this talk aims to examine the reasons for this continuing love affair.
