INFORMACIÓN Y DUDAS SOBRE EL BILINGUISMO EN NUESTRO CENTRO

¡Bienvenidos a nuestro instituto!

Welcome to our High School! We first began forming part of the Bilingual Project of the Comunidad de Madrid in the academic year 2017-2018 and it is now well-established in our school where all our pupils receive teaching in English throughout secondary level. We know that both parents and pupils alike will have many questions regarding the programme and we hope to answer some of those here.

What is the aim of the  Bilingual Project?

The ultimate aim of the Project is to prepare our pupils for an increasingly globalised world where a sound knowledge of the English language is a necessity. We aim for our students to have the confidence to communicate naturally with both native and non-native speakers in all situations, not only professionally but also in their day to day lives.

What is the difference between Bilingual Section and Bilingual Programme?

When pupils start in first year, they can be admitted to the Bilingual Section or the Bilingual Programme.

Bilingual Section

This is where pupils receive teaching in English of a variety of subjects. We offer Biology, Geography and History, Art and Physical Education  depending on each school year.  Students also have  five classes a week of English language lessons where all four skills are practised. The weekly tutorial session is also given in English.

Bilingual Programme

Here, pupils receive Physical Education in English and also have their five classes of English language per week. In English classes the pupils are divided up into smaller groups depending on their level of English in order to provide more personalised teaching.

How do pupils enter either of the two options?

In bilingual public schools pupils take the Cambridge KET/PET exam in their 6th year.  Pupils who pass with a B1 or an A2 level may apply for a place in Bilingual Section. Additionally, any children from all other schools who possess a B1 qualification may also apply for a place in Bilingual Section.

For those pupils who do not have any qualifications, we set up a written and oral test in order to establish each child’s level and subsequently offer them a place in Section or Programme.

Why should families choose a bilingual education for their children at Margarita Salas High School?

We believe in giving all our students a quality education which prepares them for their future, but we also believe in making sure our pupils have FUN! At the end of their first year we take them to an English camp for a week in the north of Spain where they can enjoy the great outdoors with their classmates. In their second year, we have an online Exchange with a High School in Holland where they can begin to use their language skills with young people from a different background. In their third year we have an Exchange with a High School in Winchester, England. Our pupils spend time with an English family and then welcome their partner into their homes in Spain. During this year, pupils also take part in the Global Classrooms Competition. This is a mock conference of the United Nations in which pupils perfect their research, public speaking and debating skills.

In their fourth year, we prepare them to sit their Cambridge exams, the level of which can range from A2 all the way to C1 depending on each individual case.

We finish fourth year by participating in the Debate Tournament organised by the Comunidad de Madrid.

Last but not least, we have native Language Assistants who organise activities with pupils ranging from a Spelling Bee to Storytelling.

In short, at Margarita Salas High School our desire is for our pupils to learn and grow in a challenging, fun and safe environment which will provide them with memories to cherish forever!
