The Spanish Counter Method

The Spanish Counter Method

Since we started teaching in English with the bilingual high school program, we have had a goal that is hard to achieve: that students speak English not only with the teachers but also with each other when they are doing collaborative work. To address this challenge, at IES Isaac Peral we are using our own method: the "Spanish Counter". This involves teachers, with the help of conversation assistants, writing down each time they hear a student speaking in Spanish. Students who speak in Spanish a number of times must perform some extra activity in which they use oral expression in English (mini-presentation of a topic, participate in a spelling exercise, etc.). On the other hand, students who keep their Spanish counter at zero in all bilingual classes are rewarded every two months.

The method is working very well; students are not only substantially increasing their use of English, but, instead of seeing it as a burden, they understand the method as what we want it to be: a stimulating academic game.
