ECOSYSTEMS

These pictures show images of Doñana National Park, in southern Spain, near the Guadalquivir river delta.

Flamingos on the marshland Lynx are an endangered species El Rocio is a hamlet in Doñana The park is used annually by thousands of people participating in the famous pilgrimage to El Rocío.

This park is very important because every year thousands of migratory birds arrive from Europe and Africa.

And we have  a huge variety of landscapes in Spain

An ecosystem

Living things in an ecosystem interact to one another.  The next video explains the difference between species, population, habitat and community.

More about populations and communities here.

The physical environment of an ecosystem includes numerous factors that influence living things. Physical environments can be terrestrial or aquatic.

Terrestrial environment. Climate, soil conditions and terrain are its most important factors In aquatic environments the most important factors are salinity, amount of light, water current, temperature and the type of seabed or riverbed. This image shows a freshwater ecosystem with very low levels of salinity.  Marine ecosystems contain high levels of salt. Light depends on the depth and clarity of water. This factor is important as plants and algae need light to grow.

Food relationships are the most important ones within an ecosystem.

A food chain shows how the species in an ecosystem are connected to one another by their food relationships.

A food web shows better how plants and animals are interconnected because it is a combination of various food chains.

Last video shows how producers (plants) are the food of the primary consumers (herbivores). Then herbivores are eaten by secondary consumers (carnivores), eaten as well by the tertiary consumers

The lion is a predator. It hunts other animals for food. Scavengers are those carnivorous animals that eat carrion (already dead animals) rather than hunting fresh meat for themselves. Parasites feed off of other living things without killing them. These are some of the parasites that feed off of cats.

Unfortunatelly, human activity has a negative effect on the environment and the world´s ecosystems.

The most important environmental problems are:

A) Pollution

B) Global warming

C) Deforestation

D) Loss of biodiversity
