UNIT 3: ANIMALS
Life makes the Blue Planet a precious and unique planet. Animals and plants are living things.
Did you know that there are 8.7 million of species of animals on the world?
Did you know that about 97% of the animals on Earth are invertebrates and only the 3% are vertebrates?

Some ANIMALS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION
There are many animals and plants in danger of extinction in the world....
Unlikely some especies have already deseapered, so they are totally extincted...
This is happening every year for many different reasons...
Some of the most important reasons for living things to go into danger of extinction are:
1. The climate change (global warming, drought, fires, ....)
2. Contamination of water bodies or land areas, pollution of the air...
3. The human expansion over the natural habitat of each especies, which produces a conflict between some living things and the humans, and reduces the natural habitat or area where they can live.
(Many animals are killed by cars on roads,...)

4. Overexplotaion of plants or animal hunting.
The Iberian wolf has been hunted by people for centuries. |
5. The introduction of some plants or animals from different ecosystems, countries or continents is very dangerous, because some of the new especies compete with the original, native ones for the same resources, food, areas to live...
6. Some animals can´t find the normal food they usually ate (due to the previous reasons).
(Eating a rich variety of food, protects animals more. But some carnivores or herbivores animals´ diet depends a lot on only one or a few especies. So if those food provider especies are reduced.... the consumer has also got a serious problem for surviving.
Example The giant panda bear eat up to a 98% of bambu, so panda bears are in danger of extinction because bambu forests have been also reduced by the human effect....
Up to the 80% of the iberian linx´s diet consists on rabbits. So when a lot or rabbits have died to a big and serious rabbits illness, linxes had a lot of problem to eat them. Well The iberian linx has also problems with the human explasion, they are killed by cards on roads, and some people have done illegal hunting of them...
7. Some animals reproduce very slowly, so if there are not many it is more difficult for them to recover.
